Change Agents Is A Two Year Old

November 7, 2023

When you fall, get back up.

This November marks the two year anniversary of Change Agents Training. In the last two years, we have enjoyed the opportunity to work with more than 40 different organizations in the public and private sectors.

And in more than one way, we feel like a two year old.

Messy, loud, awkward, and kind of annoying.

At least, that’s what I assume two year olds feel like.

It’s been more than 20 years since I’ve been around a two year old consistently, but I still think I have them down.

Two year olds struggle with walking, talking, eating, and sleeping. As a company, we struggle with invoicing, delivering, auditing, and innovating.

In the last two years, we got contracts and lost contracts. We made friends and let them down. We worked hard and got chewed up and spit out.

Like a toddler can surprise you, we also accomplished things that we never thought were possible. We hit our revenue targets and then beat them. We hit our training numbers and then beat them.

In the last two years, we have seen more than 4,500 people move through our training. And we were able to reach out and influence more than triple that number.

Despite all of these successes, we still keep falling down. We still wake up in the middle of the night. We struggle to express our feelings and occasionally throw temper tantrums.

As a company, when we launch a new innovation program, we can stumble out of the gate. This year, we launched several new programs, and in each scenario, we fell, tripped, and yelled.

When we struggle, I can only think about what a two year old does every time it falls over.

They scream, cry, and then get back up. They wipe their snot and try again.

It is hard for adults to do this. When adults fall, we have a tendency to slow down—sometimes even stopping their progress altogether.

What a two year old does better than most adults is that they get up and try again, no matter what happens. We could learn a thing or two from them.

I know that there have been many times in the last two years where we fell, and thanks to our dozens of clients, friends, supporters, and family, we were able to get up and walk again. And again.

This year looks more and more promising. We hope we will continue to fall, scream, and cry.

Because we know that every time we get back up, those falls and screams make us better at what we do. And we cannot wait to be able to walk—inspire—talk—deliver—and innovate with you.
